I'm a First Time Coach.. What do I do?
This page contains information that people volunteering to coach for the 1st time will find invaluable. And returning coaches can use as a refresher. Information is presented in a timeline format beginning with what to do before the season starts, how to run the 1st practice and your 1st game. The information presented deals not only with how to practice or what drills to run, but also the administrative side. Let's proceed!
First, let us Congratulate you and say Thanks for donating your time! We are all volunteers and it's people like you that make Soccer possible for our Children!
BEFORE THE SEASON STARTS
You've just volunteered to be a Head or Assistant Coach. As the registration period comes to a close, teams will be created and coaches assigned at each Division and Team. Ideally there will be a Head Coach, Assistant Coach and Team Mom for each Team in each Division. But sometimes we are short on volunteers and a Team may only have a Head or Assistant Coach with a Team Mom. In either case you will receive a roster of your team usually by email about 2 weeks before the season starts. Once you receive your roster you need to complete the following steps.
1) Contact your parents either individually by phone or create an email and send to all parents that includes..
a) Who you are
b) What your name is
c) What your Division is
d) What your Team Color is
e) What Days you will practice
f) What Time you will practice
g) What Park you will practice at
h) What Field you will practice on
WHAT TO DO AT THE FIRST PRACTICE
1)Introduce yourself, the other coach and Team Mom to the Parents
2)Have the children play freely on the practice field while you meet the parents
3)Talk about the goal for the season, to have fun and learn about soccer
4)Talk about the lightning policy
5)What to bring to each practice
6)How to dress
8)Practice Cancellation policy
9)Getting Jerseys printed with name and collecting money
